Dubai Airport – Departure Terminal 3 & Check-in Counters
Your Emirates A380 business class experience begins at Dubai International Airport (DXB). The state-of-the-art Terminal 3 is exclusively for Emirates flights, giving their premium flyers an elevated start to their journey.
Check-In Tips:
– Check-in online 48 hours in advance to select your preferred seat. As a business class flyer, seat selection is free.
– Look for dedicated business/first class counters to avoid queues. Further down the terminal is less crowded. You can also use self check-in kiosks.
– There’s a special drop-off area for business/first passengers arriving by car – ask your driver in advance. Otherwise, you’ll need to walk from general drop-off.
– Have your passport, boarding pass and any pre-filled arrival forms ready. Mauritius requires an “all-in-one travel form” completed online.
– Photos aren’t allowed in the check-in hall – good to know!
After check-in, premium passengers can use dedicated smart gates for expedited passport control. Simply scan your boarding pass and look into the camera when prompted.
Proceed through security screening and towards your assigned lounge – A Gates or B Gates, clearly signposted. If your gate is in a different area, take the airport train to your departure concourse.
Overall, transit through Terminal 3 as a business class passenger is very efficient. Within 20 minutes, we swiftly checked in, cleared immigration and made our way to the lounge.
However, our check-in experience proved underwhelming and lacking in warmth. The staff member who assisted us never smiled and appeared visibly bored. No effort was made to brighten the interaction. Unfortunately, over the years, we’ve found service on Emirates flights to be inconsistent – very hit or miss depending on luck. As a four star global carrier, we would expect more standardized service delivery to align with their luxury positioning. All customers deserve courteous, polished treatment from start to finish. With ongoing training and quality control, Emirates can certainly achieve service excellence befitting their premium Fly Emirates brand promise
The Emirates Business Class Lounge – B Gates

The Emirates business class lounge at the B Gates is an oasis to relax pre-flight. With complimentary gourmet dining, premium beverages, high-speed WiFi and attentive service – this lounge is a world-class experience.
To enter, simply scan your boarding pass at the automated gates. The lounge features distinct zones for Middle Eastern/Western and Asian cuisines. At breakfast, highlights included:
Middle Eastern & Western:
– Croissants, chocolate croissants, salad bar with hummus and olives
– Cheese and cold meat platter
– Scrambled eggs, grilled mushrooms
– Manakish flatbread
– Foul medames dip
– Chicken sausages
– Hash browns
– Lamb sujuk
Asian Cuisine:
– Salad bar with hummus, olives
– Cold meat and cheese
– Bengali egg curry
– Chicken stew
– Chinese-style vegetables
– Beef bulgogi
– Chicken katsu wraps
– Eggplant sandwiches
Throughout the Lounge:
– Pastries, muffins, yoghurt
– Hot and cold beverages
– Waffle station
– Dessert bar with cakes
– Ice cream stand

Seating is plentiful, though mornings are busy. Food quality is excellent – fresh, flavoursome and regularly replenished. For tech-savvy travellers, WiFi speeds exceeded 100 Mbps – ideal for streaming and downloads.
Attentive staff ensures a seamless visit. It’s easy to while away time in this serene lounge environment.
Pro Tips:
– Monitor flight information closely – gates frequently change.
– For A380 flights, upper deck passengers can sometimes board directly from the lounge.
– Visit the lounge near your departure gate to avoid a last-minute rush.
With speedy WiFi, bountiful food and beverages, clean bathrooms and luxurious surroundings – the Emirates business class lounge is an ideal place to unwind pre-flight.

Dubai International Airport T3 – Departure Gate
When it’s time to board, make your way to your assigned departure gate. Boarding generally commences 45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
Unfortunately, our departure gate experience was a real letdown. No clear queues or priority lanes for premium passengers made for a crowded, disorganised gate area. It felt more like a budget airline!
In contrast to the exclusive, polished ambience throughout the rest of the terminal, this departures hall had an unpleasant cattle market vibe. Lacklustre coordination from ground staff exacerbated the chaos.
For such a stellar airline, it was surprising to encounter this departure hall debacle. Streamlined, separate queues for business/first would better fit Emirates’ luxury ethos. Nonetheless, we were soon onboard our awaited A380.
The Emirates Experience – Their A380 Business Class Cabin

Stepping onto the Emirates A380 upper deck, the sheer opulence is immediate. The business class cabin exudes upscale sophistication.
From the moment you’re warmly welcomed aboard by the multicultural cabin crew, Emirates business class pampers with peerless service and comfort.
Seating Area

The business class seat is the crown jewel of the Emirates A380. Spacious and uber-comfortable, these fully lie-flat seats guarantee restful luxury.
Key features:
– Length: 48” in upright position, extends to a roomy 70” fully flatbed
– Width: Generous 18.5” for ample personal space
– Layout: 1-2-1 configuration, aisle access for every seat
– Material: Fine leather and wood finishes
– Adjustments: Fully lie-flat with one-touch buttons
– Storage: Personal mini-bar, ample side compartments
– Entertainment: Large IFE screen, touchscreen handset

We chose seats 11E and 11F – middle seats in the centre of the cabin. Solo travellers may prefer ‘A’ or ‘K’ seats on the sides for added privacy.
Emirates’ 3D virtual seating plan helped select our perfect spots.
These coveted seats did not disappoint – supremely comfortable even for a lengthy overnight flight. The A380 business class cabin sets the benchmark for premium air travel.
Wifi Services
Emirates offers in-flight WiFi to help you stay connected. However, complex packages and rules makes usage convoluted. In a nutshell:
– All Skywards members: Free unlimited messaging
– Blue (free status): Free WiFi in business for entire flight
– Silver/Gold in business: Free WiFi for entire flight
– Platinum: Free WiFi regardless of class
Beyond this:
– Non-members pay US$2.99-5.99 for messaging
– Internet packages US$9.99-19.99 for flight passes
We feel Emirates should simplify WiFi access to improve the customer experience. On our flight, the free messaging service was patchy after crossing the Seychelles.
TIP: Overall, it’s not worth paying for unreliable coverage.
Meal Service
Aboard the A380, Emirates business class dines among the stars. The expertly curated menu spotlights gourmet creations and fine wines selected by their international culinary team.
Service began with pre-meal drinks and warm nuts. For lunch, we sampled the standard meal and a special meal.
You can find the food & drinks menu here.
Standard Meal

For the standard meal service, highlights included sautéed prawns to start – delicately flavoured and artfully plated. Our main course of grilled beef tenderloin was sadly disappointing. The beef was cooked too rare when we would have preferred well-cooked and the accompanying asparagus spears appeared overcooked and limp. While the flavours of the dish were excellent, the textures left something to be desired. For dessert, we opted again for the refreshing milk tart, which proved a fine palate cleanser after the main. While items individually showed promise, the execution as a whole fell short of the refined culinary experience one expects in business class. With attention to detail, Emirates can certainly reach impressive heights of on-board fine dining worthy of their luxury brand image.
Special Meal

One of our meals was the Hindu non-vegetarian special order option. Unfortunately, this dish was decidedly lacklustre and not representative of Emirates’ usually impeccable cuisine. For starters, we received basic vegetable fritters, potato curry, an unidentifiable paneer cheese curry, insipid salad and flatbread with mango pickle. Frankly, the bland flavours and staid presentation were underwhelming. The main course improved slightly with chicken, spinach, cauliflower, vegetable curry and rice, however still fell short of premium standards. Following the mains, I opted for the delicious milk tart dessert from the standard menu – a refreshing palette cleanser. Tailoring special order meals to feature more authentic, vibrant flavours could significantly improve this aspect of the service.
Drinks
– Moet & Chamdon Champagne
– In-flight cocktails like Mojito
– Extensive wine list, beers, juices, soft drinks, coffee and tea

Snacks

– Sandwiches, snacks and cakes at the rear lounge bar
– Ice cream served pre-landing
While some dishes were skilfully prepared, we found food inconsistencies flight-to-flight. Our beef was sadly overcooked and the Indian meal somewhat lacklustre. With more fine-tuning, Emirates can achieve culinary excellence worthy of their premium brand.
Other Amenities:
Beyond dining, Emirates spares no expense pampering business flyers:
– Comfy pillow and blanket
– Noise-cancelling headphones
– Eye mask and socks
– Well-stocked bathrooms with luxury toiletries though could have been replenished during our flight.

There was no amenity kit provided, probably because it was a day flight.
Service touches like ice cream, chocolates and refreshing hot towels maintain the indulgent ambience throughout the journey.
For an elevated experience, Emirates nails the creature comforts.
Crew and Service:
Emirates crews undergo intensive training to master the art of refined service. Proficient in English and incredibly hospitable, they anticipate needs proactively.
From our welcome glass of champagne to farewell chocolates, the crew addressed us by name and handled every request promptly. Their unwavering smiles and professionalism left a lasting impression. Special thanks to Umar who looked after us.
Standouts included:
– Welcome glass of champagne or juice
– Hot towels before meals
– Drink orders taken swiftly
– Food preferences confirmed multiple times
– Clearing courses and tableware promptly
– Periodic check-ins with passengers
– Farewell chocolates and fond goodbye
Emirates service aims to make you feel like royalty in the skies. They skillfully deliver polished, personable interactions that enhance the overall flight experience. However, this was not the case for our previous leg from Cairo to Dubai.
Mauritius SSR International Airport – Arrivals
Touching down at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport, Emirates business class enjoys exclusive privileges for rapid connections.
Upon deplaning, premium passengers have:
– Dedicated immigration/customs counters
– Priority baggage claim belt
Have your documents ready – passport, customs forms, onward tickets.
TIP: Once you have your luggage, stop by the ATMs in the arrivals hall which don’t charge international fees. They belong to the State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) and Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB). Please note that there are usually limits per withdrawal (around 10,000 rupees) but you can make several withdrawals if needed (up to your card’s daily limit). There are also money changers and local SIM card booths beyond customs, however many close before 6pm.
TIP: We prebooked an airport transfer with a rideshare service app called Alalila – cheaper than standard taxis and very efficient. We paid Rs 1,750 for a normal car whereas taxi drivers at the airport have been known to charge Rs 3,000 for the same trip to the western coast.
Overall, the airport arrivals process was impressively streamlined. Within 30 minutes of landing, we’d sailed through formalities, picked up our bags and were in our pre-booked car headed to the hotel.
Our Verdict
From start to finish, Emirates business class combines premium luxury with warm Arabic hospitality. While some inconsistencies remain, the overall experience sets a benchmark among global airlines.
Highlights:
– Ultra-comfortable lie-flat seats with aisle access
– Refined, spotless cabin design
– Champagne and cocktails
– Lounge access for relaxing pre-flight
– Courteous, polished service onboard
Areas for improvement:
– Simplify WiFi packages
– Improve departure gate coordination
– Fine-tune culinary offerings
– Delays due to congestion at the departure airport (Dubai)
– More competitive pricing would be welcome, especially with the relatively new arrival of carriers such as Saudia.
– Improve service at check-in counters for premium passengers.
