Emirates’ Ambitious Fleet Upgrade: Elevating the A380 Experience and Expanding Horizons

As we indulged in our Emirates A380 Business Class journey from Mauritius to Dubai, we could not help but anticipate the future of this iconic aircraft. Emirates has recently unveiled plans for an extensive US$ 2 billion retrofit programme, set to elevate the in-flight experience across 191 aircraft. This ambitious project significantly expands upon the airline’s initial plan to refurbish 120 planes, now encompassing 43 A380s and 28 Boeing 777s in addition to the original scope.

With 22 A380s already retrofitted, passengers can look forward to an even more impressive and comfortable cabin. The new interiors boast fresh colour palettes in carpeting and wall panels, while First and Business Class seats sport Emirates’ latest cream-coloured leather upholstery and lighter-toned wood finishing.

The airline’s signature ghaf tree motif features prominently throughout, including hand-stencilled panels in the First Class Shower Spa. This comprehensive upgrade ensures that Emirates continues to set the gold standard for luxury air travel, offering an unparalleled experience that keeps passengers coming back for more.

But Emirates’ fleet expansion does not stop there. The airline has 65 Airbus A350-900 aircraft on order, marking an exciting new chapter in their long-haul capabilities. However, recent updates reveal delivery delays for these cutting-edge planes. The inaugural A350 flight, originally scheduled for September 2024, has been pushed back to December 2, 2024, operating between Dubai (DXB) and Edinburgh (EDI). Further A350 routes to Bahrain (BAH) and Kuwait City (KWI) are now expected to commence on January 1, 2025. While these delays may disappoint eager aviation enthusiasts, they underscore Emirates’ commitment to introducing new aircraft only when they meet the airline’s exacting standards for passenger comfort and operational excellence.

This comprehensive upgrade and fleet expansion strategy ensures that Emirates continues to set the gold standard for luxury air travel, offering an unparalleled experience that keeps passengers coming back for more, whether on their iconic A380s or the eagerly anticipated A350s.

With this exciting context in mind, let us turn to our experience on the current Emirates A380 Business Class from Mauritius to Dubai.

Booking and Pre-Flight Rituals: A Glimpse into Emirates’ Digital Realm

We booked our Emirates Business Class tickets with Expedia as we managed to get a real bargain (more about this later!). One of the standout features was the ability to pre-select seats on the Airbus A380 at the time of booking – a benefit not always available, depending on your fare type.

With a generous baggage allowance of two 23kg checked bags and a 14kg carry-on, packing felt less like a strategic game of Tetris and more like a leisurely curation of travel essentials.

The Emirates app, a digital extension of the airline’s commitment to passenger convenience, facilitated a smooth online check-in process. However, a minor hiccup emerged due to our booking being under a code-share agreement with Air Mauritius. While pre-selecting seats on the Emirates platform was straightforward, online check-in required a detour to the Air Mauritius website using a unique reference provided during the initial booking. A minor inconvenience, easily rectified with a quick visit to the Air Mauritius website.

As frequent business travellers, we have encountered our fair share of booking complications. This particular hiccup reminded us of a similar situation we faced while booking a flight to Tokyo last year. It is a testament to the complexities of modern air travel and the importance of double-checking all booking details, especially when code-share agreements are involved.

SSR International Airport: A Departure Orchestrated with Mauritian Charm

SSR International Airport | Mauritius
SSR International Airport | Mauritius

Arriving at SSR International Airport in Mauritius, we were greeted by the familiar buzz of international travel. A convenient drop-off point directly in front of the International Departures area streamlined our arrival, though a word to the wise – parking is relegated to a nearby car park. Thankfully, clear signage ensured a swift and intuitive journey towards check-in and baggage drop

The Business Class check-in queue for EK702, a stark contrast to the bustling economy line, was practically non-existent. Within minutes, we were attended to by friendly and efficient staff, their warm smiles setting a welcoming tone for the journey ahead. Baggage tagging was equally swift, leaving us ample time to navigate security and immigration.

Mauritius, renowned for its warm hospitality, extends this courtesy to its immigration officers. Pleasantries were exchanged, passports swiftly processed and we found ourselves through immigration with remarkable speed. Security, too, was a breeze, thanks to the dedicated Premium Lane, allowing us to bypass queues into the duty-free area in 10 minutes.

The efficiency and warmth of the Mauritian airport staff stood out, reflecting the island’s reputation for hospitality. It was a stark contrast to some of the more clinical experiences we have had at larger international hubs. This human touch is something that Emirates could potentially incorporate more into their own service to create a more personalised experience.

Amédée Maingard Lounge: A Missed Opportunity?

Amédée Maingard Business Class Lounge | Mauritius
Amédée Maingard Business Class Lounge | Mauritius

With time to spare before boarding, we made our way to the Amédée Maingard Lounge, the flagship lounge for Air Mauritius and a haven for Business and First Class passengers from various airlines. Sadly though, “haven” might be a stretch. The lounge, while clean, felt underwhelming. The seating, though plentiful, lacked a certain je ne sais quoi in terms of comfort and design.

The food options, a mix of hot buffet items and cold snacks, left much to be desired, especially given the lounge’s status. A wider variety and a dash of local flavour would have elevated the experience considerably. On the plus side, the beverage selection offered a decent spread.

Premium spirits, a curated wine list and even champagne were available at the dedicated bar, alongside more casual options like cocktails, soft drinks and local beer. The coffee machine, however, dispensed a rather lacklustre brew, a far cry from the rich aromas one might expect in a premium lounge. The lounge’s saving grace was its staff. While not overly effusive, they were efficient and polite, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Customers should also note that there are no pre-boarding announcements for this lounge.

Is the Amédée Maingard Lounge Worthy of Emirates Business Class?

Amédée Maingard Business Class Lounge | Mauritius

Having experienced lounges at major hubs like Singapore’s Changi and Dubai International, the Amédée Maingard Lounge falls short in comparison. While it is unfair to expect the same level of luxury as Emirates’ own lounges, there is definitely room for improvement. Emirates could potentially work with their partner airlines to elevate the lounge experience at smaller airports, ensuring a consistent level of luxury throughout the journey.

Boarding: Efficiency and Order in the Skies

Our departure gate was announced, and as we approached, the boarding process was already underway. Clear signage and orderly queues – a hallmark of Emirates – made navigating the crowds a breeze. Priority boarding was strictly enforced, allowing Business Class passengers to settle into their seats before the main cabin filled. A warm welcome from the cabin crew greeted us as we stepped onboard, setting the stage for a comfortable and attentive flight.

A Familiar Embrace: Stepping into Emirates A380 Business Class

The Emirates A380 needs little introduction. Its iconic double-decker silhouette is instantly recognisable, a symbol of modern aviation luxury. Stepping into the cabin, we were enveloped in a sense of tranquility. The soft, ambient lighting felt like a warm embrace, whispering promises of a luxurious journey ahead.

Seat of Luxury: Where Comfort Takes Flight

Emirates has opted for a 1-2-1 configuration for their A380 Business Class Cabin, ensuring direct aisle access for every passenger. Our seats, generously spaced with a 48-inch pitch and 18.5-inch width, promised comfort and a restful journey. As we settled into the plush leather seat, we felt a wave of relief wash over us. With a gentle hum, the seat responded to our every touch, adjusting to cradle us in perfect comfort – it felt like they were made just for us.

And for those seeking ultimate relaxation, the seats transformed into a fully flat bed at the touch of a button. A comfortable mattress pad, a warm, enveloping blanket and a full-size pillow awaited, transforming our seats into cozy cocoons for the late afternoon flight. Overhead lockers provided ample space for carry-on luggage, while a discreet storage compartment near the windows kept essentials within easy reach.

The A380 as Your Office

As travellers who often need to work during flights, we were pleased to find that the seat design catered well to business needs. The large, sturdy table was perfect for setting up a laptop, and the power outlets ensured we could keep all our devices charged. The privacy afforded by the seat configuration also meant we could work without disturbing or being disturbed by fellow passengers.

Technological Delights: Staying Connected at 35,000 Feet

Each seat came equipped with power sockets and USB power ports, though a word of caution – the voltage might not be sufficient for rapidly charging power-hungry devices like iPhones. A vertically adjustable headrest ensured optimal neck support, while the entertainment box, cleverly integrated into the seat design, did not impede legroom in the slightest. Electric window blinds allowed for personalised light control, adding to the sense of privacy.

Speaking of entertainment, the Emirates A380 boasts a state-of-the-art entertainment system. Large, 20-inch HD touch displays showcased a vast library of films, TV shows, music albums and more. The interface, intuitive and responsive, made navigating this digital treasure trove a breeze. And for those seeking immersive audio, sturdy noise-cancelling headphones effectively muted the ambient hum of the cabin.

Amenities and Service: A Blend of Practicality and Pampering

Upon settling into our seats, we were offered a choice of welcome drinks – champagne, orange juice, or apple juice – a refreshing start to the journey. Warm towels, a small but thoughtful touch, further enhanced the sense of being pampered. While an amenity kit was not provided, basic amenities like slippers, eye-mask  and bottled water were readily available. Bottled water was generously offered throughout the flight, and a personal mini-bar at each seat ensured constant hydration. For those seeking dental hygiene mid-flight, a trip to the lavatory would be necessary, as toothbrushes and toothpaste were only available there.

A Symphony of Flavours: The Emirates Business Class Culinary Journey

Emirates A380 Business Class | Meal
Emirates A380 Business Class | Meal

Our culinary journey began with a choice of welcome drinks – champagne, orange juice or apple juice – accompanied by a warm towel. A speciality cocktail, a tantalising preview of the in-flight beverage and wine menus, was also on offer.

The meal service itself was a symphony of thoughtful touches. A hot towel was offered at the beginning of the service, while a selection of warm nuts and cocktails whetted our appetites. A warm bread selection, a delightful mix of textures and flavours, arrived alongside the starters.

The menu, primarily Middle Eastern in its offerings, featured an elaborate three-course meal. While the absence of Mauritian-themed dishes felt like a missed opportunity, the quality of the food was undeniable. Each dish was served plated individually, with the cabin crew taking orders and catering to individual preferences.

MAURITIUS WEATHER GUIDE

FIND THE BEST TIME TO VISIT MAURITIUS

For our appetiser, we opted for the smoked marlin. While the presentation was visually appealing, the taste was surprisingly average. However, for the main course, the aroma of the braised lamb shank was incredibly enticing. The meat was cooked to perfection – so tender it practically melted in the mouth – and delivered a burst of savoury flavour. The accompanying vegetables, though simple, were cooked al dente and provided a refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the lamb.

Dessert, sadly, proved to be the low point of the meal. The cheese board, a staple of previous Emirates Business Class experiences, was noticeably smaller, perhaps reflecting a trend towards cost-cutting.

It is also worth noting that Emirates provides an onboard bar and lounge located towards the back of the plane – drinks, including champagne and some light snacks are available for all business class passengers.

Where Was Mauritius on the Menu?

The absence of Mauritian dishes was indeed a missed opportunity. Imagine starting the meal with a refreshing palm heart salad, followed by a main course of Mauritian Chicken Biryani – a perfect representation of Mauritius’ diverse culinary heritage. For dessert, a light and tropical napolitaine cookie would have been a delightful nod to the island we were leaving behind. Such inclusions would not only enhance the dining experience but also extend the cultural journey for passengers.

Beyond the Plate: Service and Beverages

The service throughout the meal was attentive and polished. The cabin crew, while not overly chatty, were efficient and courteous, ensuring a seamless dining experience. Drinks were proactively offered throughout the meal, and the pacing of the courses felt just right – neither rushed nor drawn out.

Speaking of drinks, Emirates’ beverage selection was impressive. Premium champagne flowed freely, and the wine list boasted a curated selection of exclusive and organic wines. A full premium bar catered to those seeking a stronger tipple, while non-alcoholic cocktails, international soft drinks, juices and water ensured everyone found something to quench their thirst (Downloadable Wine Menu below).

In-Flight Entertainment: A World of Options

Emirates A380 Business Class | In-Flight Entertainment
Emirates A380 Business Class | In-Flight Entertainment

Emirates is renowned for its extensive in-flight entertainment system, and this flight was no exception. Hundreds of films, TV shows, documentaries, music albums and even live TV channels were available at our fingertips. The interface, intuitive and responsive, made navigating this digital treasure trove a breeze. Emirates has clearly invested heavily in its in-flight technology, ensuring the system is not just extensive, but also incredibly user-friendly.

One feature we particularly appreciated was the ability to create a playlist of films and shows, allowing us to plan our entertainment for the entire flight. The noise-cancelling headphones, a cut above the standard airline fare, provided excellent noise isolation, further enhancing the viewing experience.

For those interested in the journey itself, the moving map feature was also impressively detailed, offering real-time flight information and points of interest along our route. One minor disappointment was the external camera, which was unfortunately blurred and unusable due to dirt.

Staying Connected at Altitude: Wi-Fi and Connectivity

While Emirates offers Wi-Fi on board its flights, the experience can be hit-or-miss. Our hopes of catching up on work during the flight were quickly dashed. The frustratingly slow and intermittent Wi-Fi connection made even simple tasks feel like an exercise in patience. Both the free plan and the paid plans, priced at $16.99 USD, offered limited and patchy coverage, making streaming or video calls a non-starter. Only Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp seemed to function reliably, albeit with occasional lags. Connecting to the Wi-Fi itself proved to be a minor hurdle, requiring passengers to use their Emirates Skywards account username and password for both free and paid plans.

Faster, Fairer Wi-Fi: A Plea to Emirates

In today’s connected world, reliable in-flight Wi-Fi is becoming increasingly important, especially for business travellers. Emirates could consider partnering with leading satellite internet providers to offer faster, more stable connections. Additionally, a tiered pricing model based on data usage rather than time could provide more flexibility for passengers with different connectivity needs.

Freshening Up: Lavatory Experience

Emirates A380 Business Class | Bathroom
Emirates A380 Business Class | Bathroom

The lavatories, while relatively spacious, were not always maintained in pristine condition. On several occasions, they were left dirty, which was a tad disappointing given the otherwise high standards of the cabin. The lack of specific decor added to the utilitarian feel. On a more practical note, the lavatories occasionally ran out of essential amenities like toothbrushes and hand cream, which could be inconvenient for those relying on the airline’s provisions.

These small oversights aside, Emirates clearly prioritises passenger comfort and a premium experience. However, in today’s world, a truly luxurious travel experience should also be a sustainable one.

Emirates’ Environmental Initiatives: Striving for Greener Skies

Emirates does not just elevate your journey; they are committed to elevating the future of sustainable travel as well.

The airline has implemented a variety of sustainable practices both in the air and on the ground. Fuel efficiency is a key focus, as jet fuel consumption accounts for the largest proportion of Emirates’ carbon emissions. To optimise fuel use, the airline invests in modern aircraft, utilises advanced flight planning systems and trains its pilots in fuel-saving procedures such as continuous climbs and descents.

On the ground, Emirates Engineering ensures optimal aircraft performance through meticulous maintenance, including engine washing and water-saving dry wash procedures. Furthermore, the company embraces recycling and reuse initiatives across its operations, from recycling meal service items to using recycled materials in its Economy Class blankets. Emirates is also exploring the potential of biofuels as a more sustainable alternative to traditional jet fuel.

By continuously seeking innovative ways to reduce its environmental footprint, Emirates demonstrates a commitment to sustainable aviation for a greener future.

Seamless Arrival: Dubai International Airport

As we disembarked at Dubai International Airport, we could not help but feel a tinge of sadness that our Emirates experience was coming to an end. The efficient jetbridge connection felt symbolic of the entire journey – seamless and enjoyable.

Immigration and customs were equally efficient, especially for those eligible to use the automated self-service gates. Baggage claim was a well-organised affair, with clear signage and monitors directing passengers to their respective carousels. Our bags arrived promptly, minimising any post-flight waiting time.

Final Verdict: An Excellent Experience with Room for Improvement

Emirates continues to set a high bar for Business Class travel, and this flight from Mauritius to Dubai was no exception. The A380 Business Class product, with its spacious and comfortable seats, was a definite highlight.

The food, while not perfect, was generally of high quality and the beverage selection was outstanding. The cabin crew, while not overly chatty, provided professional and attentive service throughout the flight.

However, a few areas could benefit from improvement. The Wi-Fi experience, while not uncommon for in-flight connectivity, was disappointing. The occasional lapses in lavatory cleanliness were also uncharacteristic of Emirates’ usual high standards.

Additionally, incorporating some Mauritian-themed dishes into the menu would have been a welcome touch, showcasing the island’s unique culinary heritage (Downloadable Menu below).

Overall, our Emirates Business Class experience from Mauritius to Dubai was excellent. The airline’s commitment to passenger comfort, coupled with its exceptional service and impressive amenities, makes it a solid choice for discerning travellers.

* We managed to obtain a very good bargain for our trip, which was part of a multi-city journey from Cairo to Mauritius with a stopover in Dubai on each leg. At a price point of approximately $1,500 for both legs, Emirates Business Class was certainly a rare bargain – especially when you factor in the comfort, service, lounge access and generous baggage allowance (Expedia). The costs per flight hour come to around $72 which we feel is excellent value.

Compared to economy class on the same route (around $1,150), the extra $350 buys you significantly more space, better food and drink, and a much higher chance of arriving well-rested. For business travellers or those celebrating special occasions, the premium can be well worth it. These fares on Expedia are rare but we have been able to bag them regularly enough over the past 3-4 years.

Here is a breakdown of why:

  • Comfort is King: Emirates Business Class offers spacious seats that recline into fully flat beds, ensuring a restful journey, especially on long-haul flights.
  • Elevated Dining: Enjoy gourmet meals, premium beverages, and attentive service throughout your flight.
  • Exclusive Perks: Benefit from priority check-in, boarding and baggage handling, as well as access to Emirates’ luxurious airport lounges.
  • Value for Money: The enhanced comfort, service, and amenities can justify the cost, particularly for those prioritizing a superior travel experience.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to splurge on Emirates Business Class depends on your budget and travel priorities. If you value comfort, convenience, and a touch of luxury, Emirates Business Class offers an exceptional experience that is well worth considering.
