Jaz Makadina Resort: Is This 5-Star Hurghada Hotel in Makadi Bay Truly Luxurious?

Jaz Makadina | 5 Star Resort | Hurghada | Egypt

Introduction

We arrived at Jaz Makadina with visions of poolside cocktails, endless buffets and impeccable service. What we found was a slightly different story – one with slow Wi-Fi, questionable soundproofing and a beach that felt more crowded than exclusive. Our initial expectations of a luxury resort in Hurghada required some adjustments based on the reality of the resort.

But putting aside our initial reality check, the resort does paint a pretty picture. Picture yourself strolling through lush gardens, dining on gourmet cuisine and (attempting to) relax by the private pool. This Nubian-style resort, ranked among the top 10 hotels in Makadi Bay, promises a unique blend of Egyptian hospitality and world-class facilities. So, is Jaz Makadina a hidden gem or an over-hyped oasis? Let us dive in and uncover the truth.

TIP: Booking

Travellers seeking competitive prices may find Agoda to be a valuable resource. We have found some of the best prices on there. Interestingly, we have noticed that Agoda often has better deals than what you can find on Jaz’s own app or website, even though they claim to have the best rates. So, before you book your next adventure, make sure to give Agoda a look.

TIP: When to Visit Hurghada

The best time to visit Hurghada is from March to May and from September to November.

As part of the renowned Jaz Hotel Group, this 5-star establishment caters to discerning travellers seeking a luxurious escape. You will also find other hotels within the Jaz Group around the resort.

We stayed at this resort in February 2024. Upon arrival, we were greeted by efficient front desk staff in the small lobby who processed our paperwork while we enjoyed breakfast. A nice touch considering we arrived well before the standard check-in time. The hotel caters mainly for a European crowd.

Rooms

Jaz Makadina has 270 rooms:

118 Superior Rooms38 square metres

120 Superior Family Rooms 47 square metres

30 Family Deluxe Rooms47 square metres

2 junior suites56 square metres

Each room has a private balcony overlooking the garden, pool or sea. The superior rooms are compact but equipped with modern amenities like a minibar, air conditioning and a Galaxy flat-screen satellite TV (with 3 HDMI + 2 USB ports).

TIP: Room Location

While rooms near the main restaurant offer the convenience of proximity to dining, it is important to consider the potential for noise from evening entertainment activities held adjacent to the reception and restaurant area. For guests seeking a quieter ambiance, exploring room options in other areas of the resort might provide a more serene experience.

TIP: Complimentary Water

Jaz Makadina provides each guest with complimentary bottled water to ensure your comfort and hydration throughout your stay. Simply dial “0” from your room phone to request 1.5-litre bottles of water be delivered directly to your room. While the resort’s policy suggests a limit of one bottle per guest per day, this does not appear to be strictly enforced. Feel free to request additional bottles as needed, either through reception or housekeeping.

Minibar

Our rooms also had a minibar which was however chargeable. You can view their price list here

Laundry Services: An Added Expense

Guests should be aware that laundry services at Jaz Makadina are chargeable. Factor this into your budget if you anticipate needing laundry services during your stay.

Sleep Quality: Comfortable Beds & Pillows

Enjoy a good night’s sleep on the comfortable beds and pillows provided in the rooms. This added touch of comfort enhances the overall guest experience.

Climate Control: Ensuring Optimal Comfort

The rooms are equipped with efficient climate control systems, providing guests with a cool and comfortable environment regardless of the external temperature. This feature is particularly advantageous during the warmer months, allowing for a pleasant and restful stay.

Accessibility

As for accessibility, we did not notice any lifts, so if you have mobility issues, it is best to contact reception before booking to ensure your needs can be accommodated.

Areas for Improvement: Room

We did observe a few areas that could benefit from enhancement. The sound insulation within the accommodations proved to be inadequate, as noise from adjacent rooms was readily audible. Additionally, the in-room safe was of limited size and outdated, posing challenges for securing larger electronic devices. Furthermore, guests considering stays during the summer months may wish to request rooms on lower floors, as the upper levels are prone to increased heat absorption during the daytime.

DINING OPTIONS AND OBSERVATIONS

All-Inclusive Resort

Jaz Makadina, as an all-inclusive hotel, takes guests on a culinary journey with access to over ten restaurants and bars.

On-Site Restaurants and Bars

The hotel features three distinct restaurants and three bars.

  • Al Masry Main Restaurant: Conveniently located next to the main lobby, this is the primary dining venue, serving breakfast (07:00-11:00), lunch (12:30-14:30) and dinner (18:00-21:00). While offering a variety of dishes, the limited lunch service hours can lead to overcrowding and a rushed dining experience. Additionally, the restaurant’s temperature control can be improved for enhanced comfort.
  • Al Sakala Restaurant: This venue provides a more relaxed atmosphere with late breakfast (10:30-11:30), pizza throughout the afternoon (12:00-17:00) and a delightful tea and cake selection (16:00-17:00).
  • Aqua Snack Restaurant: Ideal for poolside dining, this restaurant offers beverages throughout the day (10:00-18:00), along with snacks, pizza and desserts during lunchtime hours (12:30-16:00).
  • View Lounge: Enjoy stunning views while sipping on wine, cocktails or soft drinks throughout the day and evening (10:00-24:00).
  • Sultan Lobby Bar: Unwind with a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in the sophisticated ambiance of the lobby bar (19:00-24:00).
  • Al Obba Pool Bar: Conveniently located by the pool, this bar serves a variety of refreshments, including tea, coffee, non-alcoholic drinks and cocktails throughout the day (09:00-24:00).

Dine Around Scheme

Exploring Culinary Diversity with Limitations

The “Dine Around” scheme at Jaz Makadina presents an opportunity to experience diverse culinary offerings at various a la carte restaurants, each specializing in a unique theme. However, navigating this scheme comes with limitations and potential challenges.

Limited Reservations and Advance Booking:

Guests are entitled to only one free reservation during their stay and it must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. This restriction can be disappointing, especially for those seeking to explore multiple a la carte options during their visit. The 48-hour minimum advance booking requirement necessitates careful planning to secure a table at your desired restaurant.

Peak Season Challenges:

Securing a reservation at your preferred restaurant can be nearly impossible during peak season due to high demand. This limitation can lead to frustration and disappointment for guests with specific dining preferences.

Participating Restaurants:

The “Dine Around” scheme encompasses a variety of a la carte restaurants, each with its own culinary theme and weekly closing day:

  • Amaya: Indian cuisine (Closed on Tuesdays)
  • Sofra: Middle Eastern cuisine (Closed on Fridays)
  • Nino’s: Italian cuisine (Closed on Saturdays)
  • Aqua Restaurant & Bar: Mediterranean cuisine (Closed on Fridays)
  • Beach Restaurant: Mediterranean cuisine (Closed on Sundays)
  • The Grill: Steakhouse (Closed on Wednesdays)
  • Makai Tukai: Asian cuisine (Closed on Thursdays)

Food Variety: A Culinary Adventure with Room for Improvement

Jaz Makadina offers a commendable variety of food options, ranging from familiar favourites like pasta and burgers to regional specialties such as shawarma and moussaka. However, the overall dining experience falls short in certain aspects, leaving room for improvement.

Buffet Observations: Variety and Bias

The main restaurant offers buffet-style lunch and dinner with a diverse selection of dishes, including grilled chicken, roast beef, beef meatballs, beef kofta, aubergine gratin, a pasta and burger station, a grill station, fish, a salad bar, a selection of bread and cakes (both Middle Eastern and Western), and rice. However, a noticeable bias towards beef dishes may leave those who do not eat or prefer beef with limited options.

Breakfast, while repetitive, offers a decent selection of items such as beef and chicken sausages, a variety of cheeses, made-to-order omelettes, bread, and cakes. Similar to lunch and dinner, the breakfast options tend to favour beef, potentially limiting choices for some guests.

Positive Trend: Increased Variety Towards the End

A positive observation is the increased variety of dishes towards the end of the stay, with the inclusion of salmon, sushi, and prawns, providing a more balanced and diverse culinary experience.

Service and Engagement: A Missed Opportunity

Restaurant staff often appear gloomy and uninterested, rarely engaging with guests to enhance the dining experience. This lack of enthusiasm and attentiveness detracts from the overall ambiance and guest satisfaction. Additionally, the absence of the head chef and senior management is noticeable, especially when compared to other Jaz Group properties, where their presence contributes to a more engaging and personalized dining experience.

Beach and Pool Facilities: A Closer Look

Jaz Makadina boasts two swimming pools, complete with lifeguards on duty. However, the real disappointment lies in their private beach. While the crystal-clear waters and small stretch of coral reef are inviting, the beach area dedicated to the hotel is surprisingly small. During peak season, you may find yourself rubbing elbows with fellow guests, which is not exactly the exclusive experience you would expect from a 5-star resort.

Other Facilities and Amenities

Wi-Fi

Unreliable and Slow Wi-Fi: A Major Drawback

  • Despite claims of Wi-Fi availability, the resort fails to provide reliable and high-speed internet. This is a significant inconvenience for guests needing connectivity for work, communication or leisure.

In-Room Wi-Fi: Limited and Insufficient

  • The in-room Wi-Fi offers very slow speeds, with download speeds averaging around 1 Mbps and upload speeds at about 0.2 Mbps, making it nearly unusable for most online activities.

Public Area Wi-Fi: Disappointing Performance

  • Wi-Fi in public areas like the lobby and main restaurant also under-performs, with download speeds around 4 Mbps and upload speeds at 2 Mbps, inadequate for seamless browsing, streaming or video calls.

Alternative Solutions: Local SIM or eSIM

  • Guests often resort to local data SIM cards or international eSIMs due to the poor Wi-Fi. Obtaining a local SIM card can be inconvenient, requiring a trip to Hurghada or Safaga City Centre.

Personal Device with Etisalat Data SIM:

  • Using a personal device with an Etisalat data SIM card provides much better connectivity, with download speeds of 50 Mbps and upload speeds of 10 Mbps in-room, and 24 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload speeds in public areas.

Mivida Spa

Indulge in relaxation and rejuvenation at the serene spa, offering a range of treatments and therapies.

Shops and On-site Clinic: Exercise Caution

While there are shops available within the vicinity, it is advisable to exercise caution and be aware of potential overcharging. Similarly, the on-site clinic has been known to charge high prices, so having comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended to avoid unexpected medical expenses.

Transportation Options: Shuttle and Uber

Jaz Makadina provides a free shuttle service to the nearby Aqua Park for guests seeking water-based fun and excitement. For those venturing into Hurghada, a paid shuttle service is available at 9 Euros per person, once a day. However, booking an Uber may offer greater convenience and flexibility.

Cash Withdrawal: ATMs and Currency Considerations

Several ATMs are conveniently located nearby, including a Bank Misr ATM at Souk Makadi (opposite the hotel) and two more (Bank Misr & CIB) a short walk towards the beach. However, when using foreign cards, be cautious of dynamic currency conversion and potential unfavourable exchange rates that could lead to additional charges.

You can read our blog about ATMs, cash withdrawals and associated charges here.

Sustainable Travel

Commitment

One aspect of Jaz Makadina that deserves praise is its commitment to sustainability and community development through the “Jaz Gives Back” program. This initiative focuses on eco-friendly practices, environmental preservation and community outreach. From sustainable accommodations to animal welfare programmes, Jaz Hotel Group is making strides towards a greener future.

This initiative showcases the company’s commitment to sustainability and community development through three pillars:

  • Eco-friendly Practices: Implementing sustainable measures across operations to minimize environmental impact.
  • Jaz Go Green: Environmental initiatives leading to Green Star certification and active participation in green projects.

Jaz Makadina: A 5-Star Hotel with Subpar Service

Service Missteps: A Stark Contrast to Expectations

Exceptional service is the hallmark of a true 5-star hotel, setting it apart from the rest. Unfortunately, Jaz Makadina disappoints in this crucial aspect. Restaurant staff often appear indifferent and unengaged, lacking the warmth and attentiveness expected at this level. The absence of visible leadership, including the head chef and senior management, further contributes to the feeling that guest satisfaction is not a top priority. This stands in stark contrast to experiences at other Jaz Group properties, such as the 4-star Solymar Soma Beach, where service excels.

Inefficient Service: Bottled Water Requests and Beyond

Even simple requests, such as complimentary bottled water, are often met with frustrating delays and a lack of follow-through. Guests are forced to chase down orders, highlighting inefficient service and inadequate staff training. These recurring issues raise concerns about the hotel’s ability to deliver on basic amenities and provide a seamless guest experience.

Comparing Service: Jaz Makadina vs. Solymar Soma Beach & Makadi Star & Spa

This lacklustre service is even more glaring when compared to other properties within the Jaz Hotel Group. At the 4-star Solymar Soma Beach, for example, we were impressed by the genuine friendliness and helpfulness of the staff at every level. It is puzzling that a 5-star property like Jaz Makadina would fall so short in this crucial aspect, especially when its sister hotel sets such a strong example.

Jaz Makadi Star & Spa, another nearby hotel within the Madinat Makadi gated community, compares favourably. You can check our blog for Jaz Makadi Star & Spa here

The Verdict: Jaz Makadina – An Average Stay, Not a Luxury Escape

The reality falls short of the 5-star luxury experience the hotel promises as we have highlighted above:

  • Service shortfalls
  • Unusable Internet/Wifi
  • Poor room insulation
  • Small stretch of beach allocated to the hotel

Value for Money: A Questionable Investment

One of the most telling aspects is the low value-for-money rating. We paid near US$ 120 per night for a Superior Room and guests booking a 5-star property expect a level of luxury that justifies the premium price. Unfortunately, Jaz Makadina fails to deliver, leaving guests feeling that their investment did not match the experience received.

Room for improvement

While Jaz Makadina may not have fully met our expectations of a 5-star luxury experience, it is important to acknowledge the resort’s strengths and efforts to provide a pleasant stay for guests. The lush gardens, inviting pools and variety of dining options demonstrate the resort’s commitment to creating an enjoyable atmosphere.

Although there is room for improvement in service quality and amenities, Jaz Makadina still offers a comfortable stay for those seeking a relaxing getaway in Hurghada. The resort’s proximity to the Red Sea and nearby attractions, as well as its commitment to sustainability through the “Jaz Gives Back” programme, are commendable aspects that add value to the overall experience.

While the resort may not have delivered the exceptional luxury promised by its 5-star rating, it is essential to consider the individual needs and preferences of each traveller. For some, the resort’s beautiful surroundings, diverse culinary offerings and range of activities may outweigh the shortcomings in service and amenities.

Ultimately, the decision to invest in a stay at Jaz Makadina depends on one’s priorities and expectations. With some enhancements in key areas, the resort has the potential to elevate its overall guest experience and better align with the standards of a 5-star property.
